Overall Equipment Effectiveness

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a commonly used measuring instrument and tool to measure the performance of the machines and production process, and to directly see their effectiveness. OEE is measured by combining Availability (A), Performance (P) and Quality (Q). It helps to identify potential losses and to understand where in the process it needs improvement. If you have invested in expensive machines, it is important that they are used effectively.

With OEE you calculate the ratio between theoretical maximum output and real output. When there is a difference, it helps you to detect where that difference is caused. OEE checks three things:

Availability

Availability

Is the machine running when it is planned to run?

Performance

Performance

Is the machine running on theoretical maximum speed?

Quality

Quality

Are high-quality products produced?

Every time the answer is "No", you need to find out what the cause is. The OEE per production line is shown in real time. To generate a trustworthy OEE number, on which companies can manage, it is essential to obtain correct input from the work floor. The OEE calculation is linked to the ProMISe downtime registration system. Because of the real time display and quick better insight into production and downtime it is possible for everyone to intervene in time.

To use OEE more effectively ProMISe categorises downtime. Different kinds of downtime are linked to factors that determine OEE. This way it becomes obvious to the manager very quickly as to where the improvement potential lies: more in the technical area or more in the organizational area.

The universal character of OEE makes it understandable for everyone. Operators themselves can intervene quicker, managers kan manage better based on the numbers. It also makes it possible to benchmark against other companies or other business units.

Improving your OEE by means of Continuous Improvement.
